In the capital of Lu, Confucius visited the grand Ancestral Temple and 'asked about everything.' When observers mocked him for not knowing the rites, he answered: 'To ask is itself the rite.' Standing over six feet tall, he excelled in archery and chariot driving, mastering the Six Arts of gentlemanly cultivation.
A gentleman contends for nothing, except in archery! He bows and yields as he ascends; descends and drinks. His contest is gentlemanly.

At thirty, Confucius took his firm moral stand and established the first private school in Chinese history. He proclaimed: 'In education, there are no social classes.' Accepting any student who brought even a modest bundle of dried meat as tuition, he trained future statesmen like Yan Hui and Zilu.
In teaching there should be no distinction of classes. Reviewing the old to understand the new makes a worthy teacher.

Due to political turbulence in Lu, Confucius traveled to Qi. When Duke Jing asked about good government, he replied: 'Let the ruler be a ruler, the minister a minister, the father a father, and the son a son.' In Qi, he heard the ancient Shao music and was so enchanted that for three months he did not taste the flavor of meat.

At fifty-one, Confucius was appointed Magistrate of Zhongdu. Within a single year of moral leadership and practical administration, elder citizens were cared for, youth were nurtured, market trades were honest, and no one took lost items from the streets. Surrounding states sent envoys to adopt his model.
Lead them by edicts, keep them in order by penalties, and people will avoid punishment but have no shame. Lead them by virtue, keep them in order by rites, and they will have a sense of shame and correct themselves.

The Scholar-Statesman Who Foiled an Ambush and Reclaimed Stolen Land
As Grand Minister of Justice, Confucius accompanied Duke Ding to the summit at Jiagu. He insisted: 'In civil affairs there must be military preparation.' When Qi attempted to kidnap Duke Ding using barbarian performers, Confucius strode forward and rebuked the plot so fiercely that Duke Jing of Qi apologized and returned three captured territories.
Those who engage in civil affairs must have military preparedness; those who engage in military affairs must have civil wisdom.

Choosing Moral Principles over Corrupted Power and Luxury
Fearful of Lu's ascendance under Confucius, Qi sent eighty glamorous female dancers and thirty fine horse teams to Duke Ding and Prime Minister Ji Huanzi. Entranced by the spectacle, the rulers neglected state council for three days. Confucius waited until the seasonal sacrifices; when no ritual meat was sent to him, he calmly departed into 14 years of wandering.

Under Armed Siege: The Unshakeable Faith in Humanistic Civilization
Passing through Kuang, Confucius was mistaken for the ruthless officer Yang Hu and besieged by armed villagers for five days. While his disciples feared for their lives, Confucius calmly plucked his zither and sang: 'Since King Wen died, does not the burden of civilization rest on me? If Heaven does not wish civilization to perish, what can the men of Kuang do to me?' The villagers recognized his virtue and dispersed.
Heaven has not yet destroyed this culture; what can the men of Kuang do to me!

Courage to Meet the Controversial and Pure Conscience before Heaven
In Wei, the influential yet notorious Duchess Nanzi insisted on meeting Confucius. Behind a curtain of sheer silk, she bowed, her jade pendants ringing gently. Confucius returned the bow with solemn propriety. When disciple Zilu expressed indignation at meeting a scandalous court figure, Confucius swore: 'If I have done anything improper, may Heaven reject me! May Heaven reject me!'

Laughing at Ridicule: A Self-Deprecating Sage Beyond Pride
In Song, minister Huan Tui attempted to kill Confucius by pulling down the tree under which he practiced rites. Confucius said: 'Heaven endowed me with virtue; what can Huan Tui do to me?' In Zheng, Confucius lost his disciples and stood alone at the east gate. A local described him as 'looking as worn out as a stray dog.' Confucius chuckled delighted: 'Spot on! Spot on!'

When Supplies Ran Out: The Defining Moment of Intellectual Integrity
King Zhao of Chu invited Confucius, but jealous ministers of Chen and Cai ambushed the party in the desolate marshes. For seven days, food was exhausted and disciples fell ill. Yet Confucius continued strumming his zither and singing with majestic calm. When furious Zilu asked: 'Must even a gentleman suffer like this?' Confucius replied: 'A gentleman holds firm in poverty; a small man in poverty runs wild.'
The gentleman holds firm in adversity; the petty person in adversity lets himself go wild. Only in the cold of winter do we know that pine and cypress are the last to lose their leaves.

Preserving 3,000 Years of Memory: Editing the Six Classical Canons
At 68, Confucius was welcomed back to Lu as an honored elder statesman. Setting aside worldly ambition, he dedicated his final years to compiling the Books of Songs and History, fixing ritual and music, writing commentary on the I Ching, and composing the Spring and Autumn Annals. At 73, he passed away peacefully, remembered forever as the Master of All Ages.
