Born into the skilled artisan working class, he mastered mechanical carpentry; initially studying Confucian rites, he rejected lavish funerals and costly rituals to champion practical utility.
Mastering mechanical arts in his youth, Mozi once spent three years carving a wooden bird that flew for a day before failing. Observing this, he concluded: 'Skill that benefits human life is called ingenuity; skill that benefits none is mere vanity.' Turning away from aristocratic Confucian rituals that impoverished ordinary families, he established Mohism for working people.
That which brings practical benefit to humanity is true ingenuity; that which brings no benefit is mere clumsy vanity.

Formulating the core doctrines of 'Universal Love', 'Non-Aggression', and 'Frugality', he organized disciples into a disciplined brotherhood dedicated to social justice.
Facing rampant warfare, Mozi trained hundreds of disciples into a dedicated fraternal organization headed by the 'Grand Master' (Juzi). Wearing coarse hemp garments and straw sandals, they lived frugally and studied defensive siegecraft. Mozi proclaimed that if people loved others' homelands as their own, the scourge of aggressive war would cease forever.
Regard another's country as one's own; regard another's family as one's own; regard another's person as one's own. Then shall feudal lords wage no war, and citizens sow no discord.

Learning Chu was preparing cloud-ladders to invade Song, Mozi walked ten days and nights barefoot to the Chu capital, defeating master craftsman Lu Ban in nine tabletop war simulations.
Master engineer Lu Ban had built cloud-ladders for the King of Chu to attack weaker Song. Mozi rushed barefoot for ten days through dust and heat to Ying. Untying his cloth belt on the floor to represent city walls and using wood splinters as weapons, he thwarted Lu Ban's attacks across nine tabletop tactical rounds. When Lu Ban muttered that killing Mozi would solve the problem, Mozi calmly responded that his 300 disciples were already atop Song's walls armed with defensive machines. The King canceled the war on the spot.
Nine times master Gongshu set forth tactical devices to assault the wall, and nine times master Mozi repelled them. Gongshu's siege engines were exhausted, while master Mozi's defensive stratagems remained abundant.

Authoring the Mohist Canon, he recorded the world's earliest scientific experiments on camera obscura pinhole optics, light reflection, levers, and geometric definitions.
The Mohist Canon established the world's first recorded camera obscura experiment, explaining inverted images and linear light propagation two millennia before modern photography. Mozi defined force with startling modern precision: 'Force is that by which a body springs into motion', and defined a circle as 'having equal lengths from one single center'. British historian Joseph Needham praised Mohist science as the pinnacle of early rational inquiry.

Philosopher Mencius marveled: 'Mozi practiced Universal Love; if wearing himself away from crown to heel would benefit the world, he would do it.' His spirit founded Chinese chivalry.
Throughout his 92 years of life, Mozi never sought personal wealth or power. When the feudal order condemned his followers in Chu, 180 Mohists chose collective martyrdom rather than break their promise of defense. Mencius remarked in awe: 'If rubbing himself bare from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet could benefit all under Heaven, Mozi would gladly do it.'
Mozi loved all humanity universally; if wearing away his body from the crown of his head down to his heels would benefit all under Heaven, he would gladly do it.
