Li Bai vs. Du Fu: Wine Immortal vs. Poet-Sage — Who Was China's True Greatest Poet?

One flew to the moon, the other wept for the world. China's two greatest poets — and the eternal question: which one speaks to you?

China has one word for its two greatest poets: Li Du (李杜) — Li Bai and Du Fu, spoken together like 'Gilbert and Sullivan' or 'Bach and Beethoven'. They were friends, they lived through the same golden age and the same terrible war, and they could not have been more different. Li Bai wrote like a shooting star; Du Fu wrote like a slow-burning fire. Both born in the Tang dynasty (Li Bai in 701, Du Fu in 712), both exiled or displaced by fate — together they define the two poles of Chinese poetry: freedom and compassion.

(In 30 Seconds)
  • Li Bai vs Du Fu is the classic Tang contrast: romantic genius vs moral witness.
  • Li Bai channels wine, moon, and freedom; Du Fu chronicles war, hunger, and conscience.
  • They were friends in lore and complementary poles in Chinese literary education.
  • Start here if you only read two Tang poets in your life.

Two Personalities, Two Lifetimes

The differences begin at birth and run through everything:

  • Origins: Li Bai was born on the Silk Road in Central Asia, raised by a merchant family; Du Fu was born into a lineage of Confucian scholars and court poets in Henan.
  • Reputation: Li Bai was a 'Poet Immortal' (shi xian) — hailed as a banished celestial; Du Fu became the 'Poet-Sage' (shi sheng) — the moral conscience of China.
  • Career: Li Bai was summoned by the emperor, made the court's poet laureate, and left in style (legend says he made a eunuch remove his boots); Du Fu spent a decade failing the exam system and a decade starving in the capital before finally being demoted for speaking truth.
  • Poetry: Li Bai's poems take off — imaginary flights to the moon, the Milky Way, the sky; Du Fu's poems look around — at the starving, the conscripted, the ruined villages.

The Meeting That Made History (744)

In 744, their paths crossed in Luoyang. Li Bai was 43, freshly dismissed from court with a gift of gold; Du Fu was 32, still unknown, still waiting for his life to begin. They went traveling together — joined by the poet Gao Shi — roaming the plains, hunting deer, drinking under the stars. Du Fu worshiped Li Bai and remembered every detail for the rest of his life. It is the equivalent of a young painter touring the Italian countryside with Leonardo: literature's most romantic friendship.

The friendship was lopsided in the most moving way. Li Bai, the older master, mentioned Du Fu in his poems only a handful of times. Du Fu wrote over a dozen poems about Li Bai — praising his genius, worrying about his drinking, mourning him in dreams. His tribute remains the most quoted: 'Ah, Li Bai's poetry stands peerless across the world, his soaring thoughts rise unmatched above the crowd.'

The Same Storm, Two Kinds of Courage

The An Lushan Rebellion (755–763) destroyed the Tang golden age and both poets' lives. Li Bai, 56, joined a prince's army, was caught in a succession feud, and thrown in prison — then pardoned mid-exile in 759. His response to catastrophe was acceleration: the famous 'my light skiff has skimmed past ten thousand mountains', a poem that converts despair into pure forward motion.

Du Fu, 44, was captured by rebels in fallen Chang'an. His response to catastrophe was witness: he wrote 'Spring View' among the ruins ('The nation is shattered, but mountains and rivers endure'), then wandered for a decade, documenting conscription, famine, and exile in the 'Three Officers' and 'Three Farewells' — poems that read like dispatches from a war zone. Where Li Bai fled upward into imagination, Du Fu dug downward into reality. Both were acts of courage.

Which Poet Speaks to You?

Chinese readers have argued for a thousand years. In moments of triumph, we quote Li Bai — his confidence feels like wings. In moments of suffering, we quote Du Fu — his compassion feels like an arm around the shoulder. The culture says you don't have to choose: they are two halves of one complete humanity — the freedom to soar, and the courage to stay and care. Every Chinese child grows up memorizing both.

Who is more famous, Li Bai or Du Fu?

Both are absolute household names — the Chinese say 'Li Du' as one word, the way English says 'Shakespeare'. Generally, Li Bai is the favorite of children and romantics, Du Fu the favorite of adults and realists. Chinese exams, textbooks, and everyday speech use both constantly.

Were Li Bai and Du Fu really friends?

Yes. They met in Luoyang in 744 and toured central China together with the poet Gao Shi. Their friendship is celebrated as the greatest literary friendship in Chinese history, though the surviving record shows Li Bai wrote about Du Fu rarely, while Du Fu wrote about Li Bai throughout his life.

What is 'Poet Immortal' and 'Poet-Sage'?

Two honorary titles imperishably paired in Chinese culture: Li Bai is the 'Poet Immortal' (诗仙) for supernatural imagination and freedom; Du Fu is the 'Poet-Sage' (诗圣) for moral depth and mastery. His poems are called 'poetic history' (诗史) for chronicling the era.
