Living in Cuba for 21 years with his beloved cats and fishing companion Gregorio Fuentes. In 1951 he wrote 'The Old Man and the Sea' in eight weeks, winning the Pulitzer (1953) and the Nobel Prize in Literature (1954). That same year he survived two plane crashes in Africa and wrote on through severe concussion and chronic pain.

In 1961, amid severe depression and declining health that had eroded his ability to write and hunt, Hemingway died at his home in Ketchum, Idaho. He was laid to rest among sagebrush and jagged mountain peaks by the Big Wood River.
