The Butterfly Dream: Was Zhuangzi Dreaming, or the Butterfly?
Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly, fluttering merrily, unaware of Zhuang Zhou. Waking up, he was indeed Zhuang Zhou. But he wondered: was he a man who dreamed of being a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he is a man?
I did not know whether Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, or the butterfly dreamed it was Zhou. Between Zhou and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is what is called the Transformation of Things.

In his seminal chapter Carefree Wandering, Zhuangzi painted the awe-inspiring vision of the giant fish Kun transforming into the colossal bird Peng, rising ninety thousand leagues on the whirlwind to roam the infinite skies.
In the Northern Darkness there is a fish, named Kun. The Kun is so vast, none knows how many thousand leagues across; it transforms into a bird, named Peng.

On his deathbed, when disciples planned an elaborate burial, Zhuangzi smiled: 'I have heaven and earth for my coffin, the sun and moon for my jades, and the stars for my jewels. What burial could be more complete?' He passed peacefully at 83.
