A Young Swordsman Who Could Not Stand Injustice
Born in Xiezhou near the great inland salt lake of Shanxi, Guan Yu was passionate about the Spring and Autumn Annals and possessed peerless strength. When local tyrants oppressed commoners, the young warrior slew the corrupt bullies and was forced to flee eastward under a changing sky.
In life be a paragon of heroes; in death be a champion among spirits. The moral righteousness of the Annals lies in the bones, not the skin.

The Eternal Oath: Brotherhood More Sacred Than Imperial Gold
In Zhuozhou, as the Yellow Turban Rebellion broke out, Guan Yu met Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. The historical Records of the Three Kingdoms notes: 'Their love was like that of brothers; in sleep they shared one bed, and in public assemblies Guan Yu and Zhang Fei stood guard beside Liu Bei the whole day.' They took arms together to pacify chaos.
Bound as brothers on one ship. We ask not to be born on the same day, but vow to die together in mutual honor.

Step Forward an Unknown Archer: Slaying the Monster Before the Wine Chills
When the coalition marched against the tyrant Dong Zhuo, ferocious champion Hua Xiong slaughtered allied generals outside the pass. Stepping forward from his humble station as a cavalry archer, Guan Yu volunteered. Cao Cao poured a cup of warm wine for courage. Guan Yu smiled: 'Leave it poured; I shall return in an instant.' He galloped out, slew Hua Xiong, and tossed the severed head before the stunned assembly—while the wine was still steaming warm.
Leave the cup poured; I shall return in a heartbeat!

Governing the Frontier with Modesty and Unmatched Vigilance
When Liu Bei became Chancellor of Pingyuan, Guan Yu served as Major of the Detached Regiment, commanding forces with rigorous discipline and deep affection for ordinary folk. He patrolled borders, shared rations with soldiers, and ensured Pingyuan remained a rare sanctuary amidst civil strife.

Trapped on a Lonely Hill: Agreeing to Yield Only to Preserve Honor
Cao Cao launched a surprise campaign against Xu Province, scattering Liu Bei's forces. Guarding Xiapi with Liu Bei's wives, Guan Yu was encircled on Tushan Hill. Rather than dying in vain, he agreed to yield under three iron conditions: he yielded to Emperor Xian, not Cao Cao; Liu Bei's family must be revered; and the moment he learned of Liu Bei's whereabouts, he would leave. Impressed, Cao Cao accepted.
I received great kindness from General Liu and vowed to die with him; I cannot betray it. Though my body temporarily yields, my heart belongs to my original lord.

Piercing Ten Thousand Armor: The Lightning Strike That Made Him a Marquis
At the Battle of Baima, Yuan Shao's champion Yan Liang besieged the city with overwhelming numbers. Guan Yu observed Yan Liang's canopy from a distance. Spurring his steed, he charged through thousands of armored troops, impaled Yan Liang with his lance, severed his head, and rode back untouched. None of Yuan Shao's officers dared face him. Cao Cao petitioned the Emperor to enfeoff Guan Yu as the 'Marquis of Hanshou'.
Guan Yu spotted Yan Liang's canopy, spurred his horse and pierced him amidst ten thousand troops, severing his head and returning. None of Shao's generals could withstand him.

Walking Away from Imperial Rank to Keep an Oath to a Destitute Brother
Learning Liu Bei was in Runan, Guan Yu prepared to depart. Cao Cao lavished him with gold, silk, and beauties to make him stay; Guan Yu sealed every chest untouched, hung his Marquis seal in the chamber, and left a formal farewell letter. When officers demanded his pursuit, Cao Cao sighed with awe: 'He serves his true master faithfully; do not pursue him.' Guan Yu rode a thousand miles through five hostile passes to reunite with Liu Bei.
Guan Yu sealed up everything bestowed upon him, left a letter of farewell. Lord Cao said: 'Each serves his own master; let him go without pursuit.'

When Cao Cao's elite cavalry shattered Liu Bei at Changban, the fugitive army was on the brink of slaughter. Anticipating the catastrophe, Guan Yu sailed hundreds of warships down the Han River to Hanjin, safely picking up the refugees and blocking Cao Cao's vanguard. This naval fleet gave Liu Bei the leverage to ally with Sun Quan and win the pivotal Battle of Red Cliffs.

Walking into an Enemy Trap Armed with One Blade and Absolute Righteousness
Tensions peaked when Sun Quan demanded the return of southern Jingzhou. Wu commander Lu Su invited Guan Yu to an island conference with hidden soldiers. Guan Yu boarded a light skiff armed only with his Green Dragon crescent blade and a handful of attendants. At the banquet, Guan Yu countered every diplomatic gambit with thunderous moral logic and escorted Lu Su to safety, cowing Wu troops by his sheer aura.

Harnessing the Raging River: Defeating Seven Armies and Terrifying Cao Cao
Appointed General of the Front with full vice-regal powers, Guan Yu besieged Fancheng. In autumn, continuous torrential rains flooded the Han River. Anticipating the deluge, Guan Yu mounted his troops on large warships and annihilated General Yu Jin's seven elite armies of 30,000 veterans. Yu Jin surrendered and Pang De was executed for treason. Guan Yu's name 'shook the whole of China'—so terrifying Cao Cao that he considered moving the imperial capital.
Guan Yu flooded the seven armies, captured Yu Jin, and slew Pang De; his awe shook all of China. Lord Cao deliberated moving the capital to evade his razor edge.

Betrayed from Behind, Dying Unbroken: The Tragic Martyr Who Became a God
While Guan Yu was fighting at the northern front, Sun Quan betrayed their alliance. General Lu Meng dressed soldiers in white as civilian merchants to slip past beacon towers and seize Jingzhou, aided by the treacherous surrender of Mi Fang. Surrounded and cut off, Guan Yu retreated to Maicheng. Refusing offers to surrender, he broke out toward Sichuan but was ambushed at Linju and martyred. His head was buried at Luoyang and body at Dangyang. Over centuries, every Chinese dynasty and global Chinatown elevated him as the Martial Saint and God of Loyalty and Wealth.
